Memories of Spain, part 4

We spent May 9th visiting Merida, or "Merinda" as Chris had often referred to it. In fairness to Chris, the locals had also corrupted the name. The original name of the town was Augusta Merita, as in "Merit". It had been founded as a settlement for Roman legionnaires who had finished their terms of service by Emperor Augustus.
To say that the Romans had left their mark on the place is a considerable understatement. The place was filled with Roman ruins. The most impressive of these was the amphitheater as it had been partially restored. I wonder if Merida's Plaza de Toros will be as impressive in two thousand years.
